The Kind of Friend I'm Trying to Be (Even to a Dog)

Right now I've got a house guest. Denver — my brother's dog — is staying with me while he's off on a trip with his fiancée. Good for him. Genuinely excited for that guy.

But here's the thing about Denver being here: it's not really about the dog.

I've been trying to show more of the behind-the-scenes of my life lately, not just the highlight reel. And watching myself say "hi Denver" on camera made me think about something I actually care about a lot — what it means to be the kind of person people can count on.

I want to be the kind of friend you'd want to have. The kind of brother you'd want to have. Not because I'm keeping score, but because showing up for people — even in small, unglamorous ways like watching a dog for a few days — is one of the few things you can't fake and can't buy back later.

That's the value of time in action. You can't get back the days you didn't show up. You can't retroactively be reliable. Every ounce of trust I've built with the people in my life has come from choosing, over and over, to spend my time on them when it mattered — not just when it was convenient.

Denver can't say hi back. He's a dog. But he reminded me of something anyway: the small stuff is the big stuff. Showing up for your brother while he's building his own life is the same muscle you use showing up for anything worth building.

I'm not a highlight reel. I'm a journey. And apparently some of that journey involves dog-sitting.
