Asking for What You Want: Overcoming Inaction and Making Specific Requests

September 27, 20253 min read

Hey, Life with Justin Stephens community! Justin here, with a journal entry on a lesson that's been hitting home lately—asking for what you want. As we document this journey through personal finance, success, business, sales, and marketing, today's reflection is about breaking through fear and stagnation. I've had a problem waiting for people to ask me to be involved rather than going out and talking to people and asking them to be involved in what I'm building. If you don't put a specific request together, no one will know how to support you or how you want to be supported. This is something I'm actively working on. How do I ask for the support I want and need? It is your choice what you do and say, so don't let inaction lead to stagnation. If I'm being honest with myself, I've let inaction become a part of my life due to the rejection I've experienced in trying to build America's Holding Company. It is taking way longer to build because of that inaction. Yes, I'm doing the blog and production of everything, but I have not been out there selling or recruiting new members into what I'm building. Specific requests to specific people is how you get results, and I have not been specific in my requests or who they are to. That is going to change by creating journal entries for specific people, almost like a personal letter shared with the world. Who knows if it will work or not, but it will be better than the inaction that I've been stuck in! Let's explore this more and how it's shaping my path.

The Trap of Inaction: Waiting vs. Asking

From my experiences, inaction creeps in when rejection stings—I've waited for invitations instead of extending them, slowing my progress on AHC. But dreams don't build themselves; they require bold asks. Specific requests clarify support—whether funding, collaboration, or advice—and open doors that passivity keeps closed.

Making the Shift: Specific Requests and Personal Letters

To break this cycle, I'm committing to specificity. Journal entries as "personal letters" to key people—shared publicly—will articulate what I need and why. It's vulnerable, but better than stagnation. For AHC, this means recruiting sponsors, partners, and believers with clear calls.

Reflections: Honesty and Momentum

Being honest about this has lifted a weight—inaction from fear is common, but overcoming it fuels fulfillment. It's a reminder to chase dreams actively, as in my handyman hustle or WinCo groove.

Why This Matters for Your Journey

Asking boldly transforms finance (seeking raises/investors), business (partnerships), and life (deeper connections). It's about turning "stuck" into momentum.
