What's an ESOP? The Ownership Tool Most People Have Never Heard Of

August 31, 20262 min read

I talk a lot about ESOPs. About how I believe this model shouldn't just live inside companies — it should shape how we think about policy. But every time I bring it up, I get the same question back: what actually is an ESOP?

So let's slow down for a minute.

ESOP stands for Employee Stock Ownership Plan. In plain terms, it's what allows employees — the frontline workers, the people actually running the day-to-day — to become real owners in the company they work for. Not in a symbolic way. Actual ownership, accumulated year after year.

Here's what that looks like in my life right now. I work at WinCo. Every year, we earn ESOP shares equal to twenty percent of our annual income. Those shares vest — meaning they officially become mine — over a five-year period. So for it to fully pay off, I need to stay at WinCo for at least five years. But in exchange for that time, I'm not just an employee collecting a paycheck. I'm becoming an owner in the organization I show up for every day.

That distinction matters more than people realize. Time is the one resource none of us get back. When a company says "the time you're already giving us can also build you an ownership stake," that's not a perk — that's a fundamentally different relationship between people and the organizations they build with their lives.

This is why I believe the ESOP model has a place far beyond individual companies. If ownership is one of the most powerful ways to empower people, why would we limit that thinking to the workplace? It's a question worth sitting with.

If you don't fully understand how ESOPs work — ask. Send me a question. I'll answer it. Because the more people understand this model, the more we can talk seriously about where else it belongs.

This one could change more than a paycheck. It could change how we think about ownership itself.

Ownership for everyone
who shows up

Most people spend their whole life paying into things they'll never own. I built the opposite of that. Twenty-seven dollars a month. A Christmas ornament. And real ownership that grows every year you stay.
